Za’atar Day celebrates za’atar, a flavorful herb and spice blend from the Levant that is widely used in Middle Eastern cuisine. Pronounced “zah-tar,” za’atar may refer to the herb Origanum syriacum as well as the blend made from sun-dried za’atar, salt, toasted sesame seeds, and sumac. The blend has a sharp, thyme-like flavor and is a staple in the Middle Eastern pantry.
According to Your Lebanon’s Za’atar Day page, the observance was founded on September 23, 2019, by Tina Chamoun and Your Lebanon. One popular way to use za’atar is to mix it with olive oil and spread it on mankoushe, a traditional Middle Eastern baked bread. Za’atar is also used in many other dishes, and the holiday invites people to learn more about the blend and enjoy its versatility.
How to Observe Za'atar Day
Celebrate by preparing a dish with za’atar, or mix it with olive oil to use as a topping for mankoushe or another baked bread.
