Image for National Pork Month

National Pork Month

National Pork Month is observed throughout October to celebrate pork and recognize the farmers and producers involved in bringing it to the table. It also offers an opportunity to learn more about pork production and the people behind the industry.

October became associated with pork because it was traditionally the time of year when hogs were sent to market. Today, pork is available year-round, so the month has evolved into a time to thank pork producers and share their stories, according to the Kansas Farm Food Connection. The Nebraska Pork Producers Association likewise describes it as a celebration of pork and the pork industry.

How to Observe National Pork Month

Celebrate by preparing a favorite pork dish, trying a new cut, or sharing a meal with family and friends. Learn about how pork is produced by reading farmers’ stories or talking with a local pig farmer at a farmers market. When cooking pork, the Nebraska Pork Producers Association recommends reaching an internal temperature of 145–160°F and allowing the meat to rest for three minutes.
