National Bourbon Heritage Month celebrates bourbon’s heritage, tradition, and place in the history of the United States. The month-long observance takes place every September and also recognizes Kentucky’s contributions to American culture and bourbon-making.
Bourbon is a distinctive product of the United States. Its production standards include using a grain mixture containing at least 51% corn and aging the spirit in new, charred oak barrels. Although bourbon’s early history is not fully documented and accounts differ about who invented it, its story is closely connected with Kentucky’s farming and distilling communities.
On August 2, 2007, the United States Senate passed a resolution designating September 2007 as National Bourbon Heritage Month. The resolution recognized bourbon as “America’s Native Spirit” and reinforced its heritage and tradition. It also encouraged responsible consumption and efforts to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking. The resolution’s text and background provide further details.
How to Observe National Bourbon Heritage Month
Celebrate by learning about bourbon’s history and how it is made. If you drink, try a small tasting of different bourbons and compare their aromas and flavors with friends, or create a food pairing with sweet or savory foods. You could also take a distillery tour or attend a bourbon-related event, particularly in Kentucky. Enjoy responsibly and in moderation.
