World Vegetarian Day celebrates the joy and possibilities of vegetarianism while encouraging awareness of its potential benefits for people, animals, and the environment. Observed annually on October 1, it also serves as the kickoff to Vegetarian Awareness Month, which runs throughout October.
The North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) originated the observance in 1977, and the International Vegetarian Union endorsed it in 1978. According to the observance’s official website, the day promotes the “joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.” It offers an opportunity for longtime vegetarians and the merely curious to learn more about meat-free eating and consider how food choices relate to health, animal welfare, and the Earth.
How to Observe World Vegetarian Day
Celebrate by trying a meat-free meal, preparing a vegetarian dish, or exploring a new plant-based ingredient. Invite friends or family to share a vegetarian dinner or potluck, and use the occasion to learn more about vegetarianism and its potential benefits for humans, animals, and the environment. You can also share information about the day or learn more from the North American Vegetarian Society.
