National Rocky Road Day

National Rocky Road Day, observed annually on June 2, celebrates rocky road ice cream and the familiar combination of chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts. The flavor traditionally uses chocolate ice cream with nuts and marshmallows, although versions made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and almonds also exist, according to the National Day Calendar.

Rocky road ice cream is generally associated with Oakland, California, in 1929. One account credits ice cream maker William Dreyer, who drew inspiration from candy made by his partner, Joseph Edy, and added chopped marshmallows and walnuts to chocolate ice cream. The National Day Calendar’s account also notes that George Farren claimed to have created the flavor by blending a candy bar into chocolate ice cream, so the ice cream’s exact origins remain disputed. Rocky road can also refer to non-frozen desserts, including fudge, candy bars, cakes, and brownies.

How to Observe National Rocky Road Day

Celebrate by enjoying a scoop of rocky road ice cream in a bowl or cone. You can also make a simple homemade version by combining chocolate ice cream with mini marshmallows, chopped nuts, and chocolate pieces, or choose another rocky road dessert such as fudge, brownies, or cake. Share your treat with friends or family and compare different combinations of nuts, chocolate, and marshmallows.
