Fresh Florida Tomato Month, also known as National Florida Tomato Month, celebrates Florida’s fresh tomato harvest and encourages people to enjoy the fruit while supporting the state’s agricultural community. Observed throughout April, the month highlights tomatoes’ versatility in salads, sauces, salsas, and other dishes. The St. Augustine Record notes that April is Fresh Florida Tomato Month.
Florida’s tomato industry began in the 1870s, and commercial tomatoes are grown across much of the state. The state’s pick-and-ship season runs from October through April, making April a fitting time to savor fresh Florida tomatoes. In 2013, the Florida Tomato Committee marked the month with an outreach campaign in which food bloggers created recipes featuring fresh Florida tomatoes as the main ingredient. Growing Produce reported on the campaign.
How to Observe Fresh Florida Tomato Month
Celebrate by picking up Florida-grown tomatoes at a farmers’ market or local produce stand, then use them in a salad, salsa, soup, or sauce. Try a tomato variety you have not tasted before, or grow tomatoes in a container or garden if local conditions are suitable. Share a tomato dish with friends and take a moment to appreciate the farmers who grow Florida’s crop.
