9 × 13 Day celebrates the versatile 9-by-13-inch pan used for everything from breakfast casseroles and lasagna to cakes, brownies, and bars. Its September 13 date is a playful rendering of the pan’s dimensions as 9/13.

Jacqueline Marie Barnhardt founded the observance in 2017. The familiar rectangular pan is commonly about two inches deep and is available in different materials, including metal and glass. Its broad surface makes it useful for layered dishes, shareable desserts, and recipes designed to be cut into individual portions. As one account of the holiday explains, the natural way to observe is simply to cook or bake something in the pan.

Although it is a kitchen staple, pan size matters: changing dimensions can affect the depth and baking time of a recipe. A guide from King Arthur Baking recommends considering both surface area and depth before substituting another pan.
