National Organic Harvest Month celebrates organic food, agriculture, and the people who grow and produce organic products. Observed throughout September, it raises awareness of organic agriculture and the growing organic products industry while inviting consumers and retailers to appreciate the bounty of the harvest. The Organic Trade Association describes Organic Month as a time to promote the benefits of organic and consider how everyday choices can support human health, environmental protection, and animal welfare.
According to Organic It’s Worth It, the Organic Trade Association implemented “Organic Harvest Month” in 1992 as a promotion of organic food and agriculture through regional and local events. Past observances have included organic-themed fairs and barn dances, farm and food tours, supermarket tastings and displays, school activities, restaurants, parks, and farmers’ markets. September is a fitting time for the celebration because it offers an opportunity to recognize the organic harvest and the work behind it.
How to Observe National Organic Harvest Month
Celebrate by choosing an organic food to try, visiting a farmers’ market, or learning more about how organic products are grown and processed. You can also support an organic farmer or retailer, prepare a meal using organic ingredients, or share what you learn with friends and family. Look for an organic certification seal when shopping, and consider attending an organic-themed tasting, class, or community event if one is available.
