National Nutrition Month is a March campaign that encourages people to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthful eating and physical activity habits. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsors the annual nutrition education campaign and provides resources for everyone to participate.
The observance began in 1973 as National Nutrition Week. In response to growing public interest in nutrition, it expanded into a month-long observance in 1980. Early activities included public service announcements, news releases, posters, and educational events in schools, health care facilities, and community centers, according to the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Today, the Academy continues to share yearly themes and practical guidance throughout March.
