National Shiraz Day

National Shiraz Day celebrates Shiraz, the bold red wine made from the grape also known as Syrah. Shiraz is associated especially with Australia, where the grape is known for producing rich, fruit-forward wines, while Syrah is the more common name in the Northern Hemisphere. Its flavors can include dark berries, black pepper, spice, chocolate, smoke, and violet.International Shiraz Day

The observance takes place on the fourth Thursday in July. A Sydney-based wine marketing agency, Mastermind Consulting, is credited with establishing it in 2020; another account places the holiday’s establishment in 2000, so the date’s documented origin is not entirely consistent. Shiraz and Syrah are genetically the same grape, although the names have come to suggest different regional styles. Shiraz Day is a wine celebration and should not be confused with the separate May observance honoring Shiraz, the historic city in Iran.

How to Observe National Shiraz Day

Celebrate by opening a bottle of Shiraz and enjoying it with grilled meat, lamb, sausages, hard cheese, or another peppery dish. You could also compare an Australian Shiraz with a French Syrah to explore how regional styles differ, or look for a winery tour, tasting, food-pairing class, or educational session.
