Worldwide Food Service Safety Month is observed throughout December and focuses on food safety in professional food service while reminding home cooks to handle food safely, too. According to the holiday’s information page, people who work with food should take care when buying, storing, preparing, serving, and storing prepared food.
The month was founded by Harold LeBouf II and has been sponsored by Sweet & Savory Food Concessions since 1998, according to the same source. Its observance has included an annual food safety contest, with themes such as raw food, baking, dinner meals, desserts, outdoor cooking, roasting, and fried food safety. Contestants write a 100- to 800-word essay about a personal experience with safe food handling, and the winner is announced between January 1 and January 15.
How to Observe Worldwide Food Service Safety Month
Celebrate by reviewing how you buy, store, prepare, serve, and store food at home. If you work in food service, use December as a reminder to revisit your workplace’s food-safety and sanitation procedures. You can also write a 100- to 800-word essay about a personal experience with safe food handling, following the contest format described by the holiday’s information page.
