National Shawarma Day (Canada) celebrates shawarma, a Middle Eastern dish of seasoned, marinated meat that slowly cooks on a rotating vertical skewer. The meat is thinly carved and may be served in a warm pita, over rice, or with fries, along with toppings such as fresh herbs, vegetables, feta, and sauces. The name is inspired by the Arabic word for “to turn,” describing the cooking method; shawarma is believed to have been created in Turkey as early as the 18th century. Osmow’s announcement
Osmow’s created National Shawarma Day in 2020 and announced October 15 as its date. The occasion was intended to celebrate shawarma and encourage more people to try the Middle Eastern street food. A 2020 report from strategy says the date also marked 20 years since founder Sam Osmow came to Canada from Egypt and opened the first Osmow’s location in Mississauga.
How to Observe National Shawarma Day (Canada)
Celebrate by enjoying shawarma from a local Middle Eastern or Mediterranean restaurant. Try it as a pita wrap, over rice, or with fries, and explore different toppings and sauces. Vegetarian diners can choose falafel. You can also share a photo or video of your meal using #NationalShawarmaDay, as Osmow’s invited celebrants to do in its original announcement.
