National Eggnog Month celebrates eggnog, the creamy, frothy holiday drink also known as milk punch. It is generally made with milk, sugar, cream, and whipped egg whites; spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon may be added, and spirits are optional. The month is observed throughout December, also under the name National Egg Nog Month.
Eggnog’s origins are disputed, but historians’ best guess connects it to posset, a warm, milky ale enjoyed in the English Middle Ages. According to Michigan State University Extension, the drink was thought to have reached the United States before the Revolutionary War. In the American colonies, plentiful dairy products, chickens, and rum or bourbon helped eggnog become more widely enjoyed. Even the word “eggnog” has an uncertain origin, with theories linking it to “noggin,” a small cup, or “egg-and-grog.”
Enjoy eggnog chilled or use it in holiday desserts. It can be served plain or topped with nutmeg, cinnamon, or whipped cream, and it is also available in nonalcoholic versions.
How to Observe National Eggnog Month
Celebrate by pouring yourself a glass of eggnog, making a batch at home, or trying an egg nog recipe collection. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, or whipped cream, or use eggnog in cookies, cream puffs, trifles, waffles, or another dessert. Choose a nonalcoholic version if you prefer; if adding spirits, enjoy responsibly and never attempt competitive drinking.
