National Peanut Month celebrates the peanut throughout the month of March. Although commonly called a nut, the peanut is a legume that grows underground and belongs to the same family as peas and beans, as Southeast AgNet explains. Peanuts can be enjoyed whole, made into peanut butter, or used in candies, baked goods, and other foods.
Peanuts have a long history of cultivation and culinary use. In the United States, peanut production expanded during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as new equipment made the crop easier to plant, harvest, and process. Research by George Washington Carver also helped promote peanuts as an important crop in the South. Peanut butter was introduced widely at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, and it later appeared in military rations during the First and Second World Wars, according to a history published by LancasterOnline.
The observance began as National Peanut Week in 1941 and became a month-long celebration in 1974. March offers plenty of time to enjoy this versatile legume and learn more about its agricultural and cultural history.
