National Flour Month

National Flour Month celebrates flour, a versatile staple used in cooking and baking. Flour helps create bread, cakes, crackers, pasta, pastries, sauces, and coatings, and it can be made from wheat as well as corn, rice, nuts, legumes, and other grains or plant sources.

Different flours produce different results. Wheat kernels contain bran, germ, and endosperm; during milling, these parts can be separated and recombined to make varieties such as bread, whole wheat, semolina, cake, and pastry flour. The month offers an opportunity to appreciate this variety and try something beyond an everyday all-purpose flour.

National Flour Month has been observed since 1985, although its original source and founder have not been identified. Its history as a holiday remains unclear, but its subject has a long place in food preparation. Celebrate throughout March by exploring the many ways flour can be used in the kitchen.

How to Observe National Flour Month

Celebrate by looking for a different type of flour the next time you shop, then use it to bake something new. Try making bread, cookies, pasta, or another favorite flour-based food. You can also learn how milling separates the bran, germ, and endosperm, or explore the Home Baking Association’s suggestion to bake something delicious.
