National Food Safety Month takes place each September to heighten awareness of the importance of food safety education. Created in 1994 by the National Restaurant Association, the observance provides an opportunity to reinforce safe food practices and procedures.
Food safety involves everyone who produces, processes, transports, stores, handles, prepares, serves, or eats food. Each year, new themes and free training activities are developed for restaurants and the foodservice industry, covering subjects such as proper hygiene, safe preparation and cooking, and serving food at appropriate temperatures. The National Restaurant Association’s food safety resources offer additional information and training materials.
How to Observe National Food Safety Month
Celebrate by refreshing your knowledge of food safety and putting safe practices into action. Review proper hygiene, preparation, cooking, storage, and serving practices, and share reliable food safety information with family, friends, or coworkers. Restaurants and foodservice professionals can use the month’s training activities, posters, and other educational materials to reinforce food safety procedures.
