Fair Trade Month is observed throughout October to raise awareness of the fair trade movement and encourage support for businesses committed to fair trade. The movement promotes trading based on partnership rather than exploitation, with attention to fair prices and clean, fair working conditions for farmers and workers.
Fair trade products include coffee, chocolate, rice, quinoa, sugar, fresh fruit, clothing, accessories, and homewares. The month also highlights the people behind everyday products and the choices consumers make when deciding what to buy.
October became the setting for the first annual National Fair Trade Month in 2004. Today, the Fair Trade Federation encourages people to learn about the movement and support fair trade businesses, whether by shopping in stores and cafés, purchasing online, or sharing information about fair trade.
How to Observe Fair Trade Month
Celebrate by looking for fair trade products when you shop, starting with an item you already buy, such as coffee, tea, or chocolate. Visit a fair trade store or café, learn more about where your favorite products come from, and ask businesses about their sourcing practices. You can also explore ways to support fair trade and share what you learn with others.
