National Onion Day

National Onion Day celebrates the versatile bulb and the people who grow, pack, ship, and supply it. Onions add sweetness when caramelized, sharpness when raw, and savory depth to soups, sauces, salads, and countless other dishes. Red, white, yellow, and sweet onions each bring their own flavor and texture to the kitchen.

The National Onion Association (NOA) created the holiday, choosing June 27 because the organization was incorporated on that date in 1913. The first National Onion Day was celebrated in 2019. According to the NOA, the occasion recognizes not only the onion itself but also the seed breeders, equipment dealers, researchers, farmers, and others who help move the crop from field to table. In a 2019 announcement, the association encouraged people to enjoy onions throughout the day and try different varieties.

Whether they are crisp in a sandwich, gently sautéed, roasted until tender, or cooked down into a rich sweetness, onions are often the flavorful foundation of a meal. National Onion Day offers a chance to give this everyday ingredient—and the industry behind it—a little extra attention.

How to Observe National Onion Day

Celebrate by adding onions to a favorite meal, or try a dish that makes them the star, such as onion soup, onion rings, or caramelized onions.
