National Chianti Day

National Chianti Day celebrates Chianti, the ruby-red wines of Tuscany, Italy, with particular attention to Chianti Classico. These dry red wines are led by the Sangiovese grape, and Chianti Classico is associated with the Gallo Nero—a black rooster inside a red circle. The Chianti Classico region lies between Florence and Siena and is considered the historical heartland of these wines.

Chianti and Chianti Classico are distinct wine regions and classifications, although both are Sangiovese-based. Chianti Classico also includes an aged Riserva classification, which requires additional aging and may develop more savory flavors. The holiday takes place on the first Friday in September and began in 2020, when Santa Margherita USA founded it to honor its Chianti Classico Riserva and the traditions of Tuscany and the Chianti Classico region. Santa Margherita USA’s announcement described the inaugural observance as a celebration of these Italian wines.

How to Observe National Chianti Day

Celebrate by enjoying a bottle of Chianti Classico with dinner. Pair it with pasta, pizza, Italian meats and cheeses, a stew, or a thick-cut steak, all suggested pairings for Chianti Classico. You can also compare a standard Chianti Classico with a Riserva, or learn more about the wines and the Tuscan region they represent. If you drink, do so responsibly.
