National Menudo Month

National Menudo Month celebrates menudo, a traditional Mexican soup made with beef tripe and hominy. Observed throughout January, the month recognizes menudo as a cultural food and encourages the preservation and passing down of Mexican culinary traditions to future generations.

Menudo is often served at family gatherings and special celebrations, and recipes can vary by region and household. It is typically accompanied by condiments such as onion, cilantro, oregano, and lime, along with bread or tortillas. Preparing the soup can take considerable time, making it an occasion for loved ones to gather around the table and share a meal.

Juanita’s Foods founded National Menudo Month in 2018. That year, the company celebrated with a record-setting pot of menudo. According to Juanita’s history, the soup weighed 2,439 pounds and earned the Guinness World Record for the largest menudo soup. The event, held in Wilmington, California, brought attention to the dish and the traditions associated with it.

How to Observe National Menudo Month

Celebrate by enjoying a bowl of menudo, making your own, or hosting a menudo dinner for family and friends. Serve it with onion, cilantro, oregano, lime, and bread or tortillas, if desired. Use the month as an opportunity to learn about menudo’s place in Mexican culinary traditions and share your own family food memories around the table.
