National Bake Week celebrates home baking and encourages people to spend seven days creating breads, cakes, cookies, and other baked treats. Held for seven days beginning on the first Monday in April, it turns the kitchen into a place for creativity, skill-building, and sharing. The observance also highlights the simple satisfaction of making food at home, from a loaf of sourdough bread to a favorite family recipe.
Baking itself has a long history. Early people baked paste made from soaked, mashed grains, while bread-baking in ancient Greece dates to around 600 B.C. Over time, baking developed into a wide variety of breads and pastries and eventually became both a home activity and a large-scale commercial industry. National Bake Week offers an opportunity to return to the hands-on side of baking and enjoy the results with others.
How to Observe National Bake Week
Celebrate by baking a loaf of bread, preparing a favorite recipe, or trying a baked food you have never made before. Invite friends or family to join you for a baking gathering, and share what you make with neighbors or people who may be going hungry. You can also exchange recipes and compare everyone’s creations at the end of the week.
