Vegan Cuisine Month takes place throughout February and encourages people to discover the variety of vegan food, try plant-based meals, and learn about the people who helped advance vegan cuisine. The month also provides an opportunity for vegans to come together and introduce friends, family, and communities to vegan food and life.
The American Vegan Society organizes the observance as a time to celebrate vegan cuisine pioneers and share their contributions. Honorees include cookbook authors, cooking instructors, restaurateurs, food developers, and registered dietitians. Freya Dinshah, president of the American Vegan Society, wrote The Vegan Kitchen in 1965, described by the Society as the first U.S. cookbook to use the word “vegan” in its title and explain the ethics of veganism. The Society also encourages restaurants, schools, workplaces, and community groups to get involved in the month.
How to Observe Vegan Cuisine Month
Celebrate by preparing and enjoying vegan meals, learning about the history of vegan cuisine, and exploring new recipes. Ask a favorite restaurant about its vegan options, or encourage a local eatery to add a vegan dish. You can also organize a vegan meal, cooking class, or community event, and find ideas and event-planning guidance from the American Vegan Society. Share photos of your food with #VeganCuisineMonth and recognize the pioneers who helped expand vegan cooking.
