Lemonade Day encourages young people to experience entrepreneurship by starting, owning, and operating their own lemonade stands. Held on the first Sunday in May, the day turns a simple drink stand into a hands-on lesson in setting goals, making a business plan, managing money, serving customers, and working toward a profit. In participating cities, children prepare for a community-wide Lemonade Day with support from adult mentors and their communities. Lemonade Day describes the program as an experiential way for youth to learn how to run a business.

Michael and Lisa Holthouse founded Lemonade Day in Houston in 2007. The idea began when their daughter, Lissa, wanted to earn money for a pet turtle. Her plan to open a lemonade stand inspired her father to create a broader program that could help other children learn business and life skills. Participants are also encouraged to spend some of what they earn, save some, and share some with their communities. Lemonade Day’s account of its founding explains how one child’s small business idea grew into a youth entrepreneurship program.

How to Observe Lemonade Day

Celebrate by helping a young person plan and run a lemonade stand. Work together on a simple budget, a goal, a sign, and a location, then let the budding entrepreneur practice welcoming customers and handling money. Support another child’s stand by stopping for a cup, or simply enjoy a glass of lemonade and talk about the skills involved in running a small business. If you set up a stand, do so on private property with the owner’s permission.
