National Canned Food Month

National Canned Food Month is observed throughout February and highlights canned food while addressing misconceptions that it is less nutritious than fresh food. The Canned Food Information Council designated the month in 1987 for that purpose.

Canning has roots in the French Revolution, when Nicolas Appert developed a method of improving food’s shelf life by heating food in sealed glass bottles. The process later evolved to use metal containers; early tins were difficult to open until Robert Yates invented a tin-opener in 1855. Today, canned foods remain a convenient pantry staple, and both steel and aluminum cans can be recycled. The Metal Packager’s account of canned food history provides additional background.

How to Observe National Canned Food Month

Celebrate by enjoying a canned-food favorite, checking what is in your pantry, or learning more about the history of canning. You can also prepare a meal with canned ingredients, learn how to can food properly, or donate extra canned goods to a local food pantry or shelter. Share your observance with #NationalCannedFoodMonth.
