National Brunch Day

National Brunch Day celebrates the relaxed meal that combines breakfast and lunch. Observed on the third Sunday in September, it offers a chance to sleep in, enjoy a late-morning spread, and share food and conversation with friends or family.

The word brunch is a blend of “breakfast” and “lunch.” According to a history of brunch, British writer Guy Beringer coined the term in 1895 in his article “Brunch: A Plea,” where he proposed a leisurely Sunday meal served between breakfast and lunch. Brunch later gained popularity in the United States during the 1930s, became more mainstream in the 1960s, and developed into a distinctive weekend dining experience during the 1980s. Today, brunch menus can include both familiar breakfast foods—such as pancakes, waffles, omelettes, bacon, and orange juice—and lunch-inspired dishes.

How to Observe National Brunch Day

Celebrate by preparing or ordering a brunch meal. Enjoy pancakes, waffles, an omelette, or another favorite breakfast-and-lunch combination, and invite friends or family to share the meal. You can also learn more about the history of the word brunch and raise a glass of orange juice to a leisurely late-morning feast.
