National Sweet Tea Day

National Sweet Tea Day celebrates sweet tea, a Southern U.S. staple made by sweetening brewed tea while it is still hot and serving it over ice. It is also known as sweet iced tea, and it may be enjoyed plain or with lemon, mint, peach, or raspberry.

Sweet tea’s documented history reaches back to the late 19th century. The oldest known recipe was published in Housekeeping in Old Virginia, a community cookbook by Marion Cabell Tyree; the recipe called for green tea, sugar, and ice. By 1890, a Nevada newspaper account of a Confederate veterans’ reunion mentioned sweet tea among the refreshments served at a large barbecue. (Web-Holidays.com)

National Sweet Tea Day offers a refreshing way to enjoy this sweet, iced beverage on August 21. Its date is distinct from National Iced Tea Day, which is observed on June 10.

How to Observe National Sweet Tea Day

Celebrate by brewing a strong batch of tea and adding sugar while the liquid is hot so it dissolves completely. Pour the cooled tea over ice and add a squeeze of lemon if you like. You can also enjoy a glass with friends or family, try a peach or mint variation, or share your sweet-tea celebration online. (Boulder City Review)
