National Zinfandel Day celebrates the versatility of Zinfandel, a wine grape known for producing styles that can range from light and juicy to rich and spicy. The observance takes place on the third Wednesday of November, a date chosen to highlight Zinfandel’s compatibility with fall foods such as turkey, winter squash, barbecue, and pasta, while placing the grape in the spotlight just before the holiday season.
The day was created in 2012 by Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP). ZAP describes it as an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of America’s wine grape and connect with other Zinfandel enthusiasts. More than 90% of Zinfandel is grown in California, although wine made from the grape is found throughout the United States. Its fruit-forward flavor profile may include raspberry, blackberry, boysenberry, cherry, black pepper, cloves, anise, or herbs.
How to Observe National Zinfandel Day
Celebrate by sharing a bottle of Zinfandel with friends or family and pairing it with foods you enjoy. Try a cheeseboard with varied flavors and textures, or explore Zinfandel’s fruit and spice notes alongside barbecue or pasta. You can also visit a tasting room or local wine bar, learn to identify aromas with a Zinfandel Aroma Wheel, or visit a Zinfandel winery to see where the grape is grown and made. If you drink, enjoy responsibly.
