National Picnic Month

National Picnic Month celebrates the simple pleasure of dining outdoors and enjoying nature with friends and family. Pack a meal, find a pleasant spot, and take a break from the usual routine—whether at a park, by a lake, or in your own backyard. As the U.S. Forest Service notes, summer picnics offer a way to enjoy the outdoors and one another’s company.

Picnics have a long history. North Dakota State University Extension explains that the word “picnic” dates to the late 1600s and may come from the French piquenique. Outdoor feasts once accompanied successful hunts, while simpler meals in parks became common later. The American Bakers’ Association launched National Picnic Month in 1952.

How to Observe National Picnic Month

Celebrate by packing an easy meal and enjoying it outside with family or friends. Sandwiches, finger foods, fruit, bread, cheese, and beverages all make practical picnic fare. Add a Frisbee or another simple outdoor game, or just relax and appreciate the scenery.

Keep perishable foods cold in a cooler, bring clean utensils for serving and eating, and keep raw meat separate from other foods. NDSU Extension’s picnic guidance offers additional food-safety tips.
