National Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Day

National Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Day celebrates Aceto Balsamico di Modena, the distinctive condiment associated with the Italian provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The observance takes place annually on November 1 and has been held since 2020, with the Consorzio Aceto Balsamico di Modena listed as its organizer.

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is made from fermented grape must combined with aged vinegar and wine vinegar, then matured in wooden barrels. Its history is linked to the ancient Roman practice of cooking grape must, while the word “balsamic” first appeared in the Este family’s ducal records in 1747. The product’s modern identity is closely tied to its place of production: the European Union granted it Protected Geographical Indication status in 2009. The Consorzio’s overview describes it as a product with an ancient history that has adapted to modern cuisines.

This day also offers an opportunity to appreciate the difference between Balsamic Vinegar of Modena IGP and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. The traditional variety is made from cooked grape must alone and is aged for years in a sequence of wooden casks, while the IGP product follows a different recipe and aging process. Both are closely connected to Modena’s culinary heritage.

You can also explore the history of the product at the Traditional Balsamic Museum of Modena or read about the differences between its IGP and PDO varieties in VisitModena’s overview.
