National School Lunch Week highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch and the role it can play in a child’s life, both inside and outside the classroom. Held during the second full week of October, the observance draws attention to the National School Lunch Program, which serves nearly 30 million children every school day with meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and fat-free or low-fat milk.
The National School Lunch Program began with the National School Lunch Act of 1946. Sixteen years later, President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week to promote the importance of school lunch. The week also offers an opportunity for schools and communities to share information about school meals, encourage participation, and recognize the people who prepare and serve them. The School Nutrition Association notes that observances may include special menus, events, and activities.
How to Observe National School Lunch Week
Celebrate by enjoying a school lunch and learning more about the meals served at your school. Thank cafeteria and school food service workers for their work, invite teachers or administrators to share lunch with students, decorate the cafeteria with lunch-themed posters, or offer new menu items and collect student feedback. These ideas are among those suggested by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
