National Hot Dog Month

National Hot Dog Month celebrates hot dogs throughout the month of July. The observance invites people to enjoy this familiar food in many forms, from a simple frankfurter in a bun to creative combinations of toppings.

The hot dog’s background is connected to European sausage traditions, particularly those brought to the United States by German immigrants. The exact origins of the food are uncertain, but Charles Feltman helped popularize sausages served in buns at Coney Island in the late 1860s. Hot dogs later became associated with street vendors, baseball, and summer gatherings. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, founded in 1994 by the American Meat Institute, promotes July as National Hot Dog Month. A related observance, National Hot Dog Day, falls on the third Wednesday of July.

Celebrate by grilling, steaming, or otherwise preparing your favorite hot dogs, then dressing them with classic or creative toppings.
