National Soup it Forward Day encourages people to share love and kindness through a bowl of soup. Each March 3, participants are invited to make soup and pass it along to a family member, friend, neighbor, or someone who could use extra warmth and care. Soup Sisters describes the day as an opportunity to “make soup, share soup, and give soup” while spreading kindness one bowl at a time in its National Soup it Forward Day announcement.
Soup Sisters founded the holiday to encourage people to make a tangible difference in their communities. The organization began in Calgary on March 3, 2009, when founder Sharon Hapton held a soup-making birthday party that produced its first delivery for the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. Soup Sisters now provides soup through community efforts supporting people served by agencies and shelters. The National Day Calendar proclamation states that the day was proclaimed for annual observance beginning in 2018.
