National Walnut Day
National Walnut Day celebrates the walnut, a versatile tree nut enjoyed as a snack and used in both sweet and savory foods. Walnuts can be eaten raw or toasted, added to salads and baked goods, or used to bring flavor and texture to dishes. The two most common major varieties are the Persian or English walnut and the black walnut. California Walnuts notes that walnuts are among the oldest tree foods known to humans, with evidence of their use dating back to 7,000 B.C.
The holiday’s history is connected to walnut promotion. According to California Walnuts, the Walnut Marketing Board created the first National Walnut Day in June 1949. In 1958, a Senate resolution led to President Dwight D. Eisenhower making May 17 a public holiday. National Walnut Day is observed annually on May 17.
