World Porridge Day
World Porridge Day, observed annually on October 10, raises awareness and funds to help provide nutritious meals to children facing hunger. The day is organized by the Scottish charity Mary’s Meals, which serves children in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe steaming mugs of vitamin-enriched porridge. Its school-feeding programs provide one meal each school day, helping children attend class and learn.
Porridge is made by heating or boiling ground, crushed, or chopped starchy plants—typically grains—in milk or water. Oatmeal is one of the most common varieties, though porridge can also be sweet or savory and include ingredients such as fruit, honey, spices, meat, or vegetables, according to Celebrity Angels.
The first World Porridge Day was held in 2009. That same year, organizers of the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships established the international day to encourage local porridge events that raise money for charity, with Mary’s Meals selected as the suggested charity. Carrbridge in Scotland is home to the championship, where competitors make traditional and specialty porridges.
How to Observe World Porridge Day
Celebrate by making a warm bowl of porridge and enjoying it with sweet or savory additions. To support the day’s charitable purpose, set up a fundraiser with Mary’s Meals, ask friends or colleagues to sponsor you, or donate directly. You could also host a porridge breakfast for family, friends, or a school or youth group and use it to raise funds for children who need nutritious meals.
