National Salad Month

National Salad Month celebrates salads throughout May. A salad is generally a mixture of cold foods, such as vegetables or fruits, often finished with dressing, nuts, or croutons. Depending on the ingredients, it may be served as an appetizer, a side dish, or a meal; pasta, cheese, meat, fish, and whole grains can also be added. The Cheshire Library Blog describes the many ways salads can be assembled and enjoyed.

The Association for Dressings & Sauces (ADS) launched National Salad Month in May 1992, reportedly in response to a 1991 Gallup poll that found three out of four people ate a tossed salad at least every other day.The Cheshire Library Blog ADS also describes the month as an opportunity to explore the variety of dressings and salads. In 2022, for example, it held a recipe contest honoring the observance and received 53 entries featuring dressings such as ranch, blue cheese, Italian, green goddess, and poppyseed. The Association for Dressings & Sauces

How to Observe National Salad Month

Celebrate by preparing a salad with a different combination of vegetables, fruits, grains, cheese, nuts, or another favorite ingredient. Try serving a hearty salad as a meal rather than limiting it to a side dish, and experiment with dressings by topping, mixing, or dipping. You can also look for new salad ideas in a cookbook or create your own combination from the ingredients you have on hand.
