Steve Haddadin, an avid steak connoisseur, declared the day in 2022 and chose his birthday, June 21, for the observance. According to the holiday’s official site, Haddadin was inspired to create a dedicated day after discovering that no Wagyu holiday existed. National Wagyu Day is intended not only to celebrate the delicacy of Wagyu, but also to help consumers understand where their beef comes from and how its authenticity can be verified.

When ordering Wagyu at a restaurant or buying it from a butcher, celebrants can ask for a copy of the authentication certificate. The certificate includes a 10-digit cattle ID that can be used to research the beef through the Japanese carcass verification system.
