National Cachaça Day (Brazil)

National Cachaça Day celebrates cachaça, Brazil’s sugarcane-based distilled spirit, each year on September 13. Also known as Dia Nacional da Cachaça, the observance highlights a drink closely connected with Brazilian culture and history. Cachaça is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, and it is the key ingredient in the caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail.

The date is commonly linked to the Cachaça Revolt of 1660, when producers in Rio de Janeiro rebelled against Portuguese restrictions on the spirit. A Royal Order issued on September 13, 1661, is generally said to have legalized cachaça’s production and sale after the revolt, although some historical accounts suggest the date may instead have reinforced the prohibition. In modern times, the Brazilian Institute of Cachaça proposed the observance to the federal government in 2009. An overview from Brazil’s Consulate-General and Foreign Ministry Cultural Department describes the day as a celebration of cachaça’s Brazilian identity and history.

How to Observe National Cachaça Day (Brazil)

Celebrate by learning about cachaça’s history, sampling it on its own, or enjoying a caipirinha made with cachaça, lime, sugar, and ice. You could also pair the spirit with Brazilian food or listen to Brazilian music while you raise a toast to the drink’s cultural heritage. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly.
