Created by the Coconut Coalition of the Americas (CCA), National Coconut Day honors the coconut, "one of the world's most versatile and sustainable natural resources," and shines a spotlight on its many benefits and uses. It also "brings together the industry and the public to celebrate everything coconuts contribute to our health, our economy, and our planet."
The coconut (Cocos nucifera) is a tropical drupe and considered to be a fruit. Coconuts are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and electrolytes. They have healthy medium-chain fatty acids that support a healthy heart and boost good cholesterol, and have lauric acid, which is known for its antimicrobial properties and ability to help strengthen the immune system.
Coconuts are found in the food, beverage, beauty, and wellness sectors. They can be consumed in a number of ways: there is coconut flesh, coconut water, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut flour, and coconut sugar. Coconut is minimally processed, plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free, and allergen-friendly. It can be used topically to moisturize and rejuvenate the skin, and may also help strengthen hair.
Native to the coastal regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, coconuts are now grown in over 90 countries. Top producers are the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Americas. Coconuts are important culturally, economically, and nutritionally. Coconut cultivation supports millions of small farmers, with some relying on coconut cultivation as their primary source of income. Coconut cultivation can also be beneficial to the environment, since coconut palms prevent soil erosion.
