National Bread Month celebrates the versatility of bread throughout November. Whole-grain and enriched breads can fit into every meal, and grain foods such as bread provide fiber, B vitamins, and minerals, according to the National Bread Month website.
Bread has a long history: evidence indicates that Swiss lake dwellers baked wheat into bread as early as 6,700 B.C. Bread has since been made around the world using a variety of ingredients and methods. Wheat remains closely connected to the celebration; one bushel can produce dozens of loaves, depending on the type of wheat and the estimate used. Kansas Wheat, for example, says one bushel of Kansas wheat can produce 90 loaves of whole-wheat bread.
Celebrate the month by appreciating bread in its many forms, learning about the wheat behind it, and baking a loaf or another bread product at home. The available sources do not identify a founder for National Bread Month, but the month has been used by baking and grain organizations to highlight bread, baking, history, and grain-based foods.
