National SugarBee Apple Day celebrates the SugarBee apple, a crisp variety with caramel-and-honey-toned sweetness. The apple was discovered by accident when a honeybee transferred pollen from an unknown apple variety to a Honeycrisp blossom. SugarBee apples are grown in more than 200 family orchards in Washington State.
Chelan Fresh and SugarBee growers launched the holiday in 2023, with the inaugural observance held on May 20. The celebration highlights the work involved in bringing the apple to market and draws attention to the role of honeybees as pollinators. The growers encouraged people to enjoy a SugarBee apple and share their experience as part of the first observance.
