National Mango Month is observed throughout June as a celebration of the mango and its many culinary possibilities. Often called the “king of fruits,” the mango is enjoyed fresh and features in drinks, desserts, salads, and other dishes. It also has a long cultural history: according to the National Mango Board, mangoes were first grown in India more than 5,000 years ago before spreading through Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and South America. In India, a basket of mangoes is considered a gesture of friendship.
The sources available here document National Mango Day on July 22, including promotion by the National Mango Board, but do not establish a founder or origin for the June observance. National Mango Month provides an opportunity to appreciate mangoes, explore different varieties, and enjoy their versatility.
