Southern Food Heritage Day

Southern Food Heritage Day celebrates the diverse culinary traditions of the American South and the history carried through its ingredients, techniques, and recipes. According to the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, Southern food reflects the convergence of people from around the world, each contributing to a cuisine with its own distinctive character.

The foodways of the region include Native American ingredients and practices, African influences brought by enslaved people, and European traditions. Corn, okra, rice, greens, grits, cornbread, and many other ingredients appear across Southern cooking, while regional styles include soul food, Creole, Cajun, Lowcountry, and Appalachian cuisine. The result is not one single menu, but a broad culinary heritage shaped by many communities.

Southern Food Heritage Day is observed annually on October 11. The Southern Food & Beverage Museum is identified as the organizer of the observance, which offers an opportunity to enjoy Southern dishes while learning more about the people and cultures behind them.
