National DOLE Whip Day

One of the most iconic snacks available at Disney Parks, DOLE Whip, also known as DOLE Soft Serve, is celebrated and enjoyed today on National DOLE Whip Day. Served at Disney World, Disneyland, on Disney Cruise Line ships, and at Disney's Aulani resort, DOLE Whip is a soft-serve, dairy-free frozen dessert. The first National DOLE Whip Day coincided with the opening of Walt Disney World's Polynesian Village Resort on Monday, July 19, 2021. The holiday has since been held on the third Thursday in July, with Disney celebrating it throughout the whole weekend.

The original and best-known type of DOLE Whip is DOLE Whip Pineapple. Other common flavors include raspberry, orange, and strawberry. The Chile-Mango Whip is one of the more adventurous popular flavors. Disney locations also serve swirl flavors, DOLE Whip Floats, and more innovative concoctions such as the Aurora Cone. Alcoholic drinks made with DOLE Whip, such as the Frozcato, can even be found at Wine Bar George in Disney Springs. There are many more DOLE Whip flavors and creations. Each year, Disney Parks Blog puts out a guide about what kind of DOLE Whips can be found and where to find them on National DOLE Whip Day.

DOLE began sponsoring the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland in 1976. At the time, their role was providing pineapple spears and juice. DOLE began sponsoring Walt Disney World in 1983, handing out vanilla soft-serve ice cream topped with diced pineapples at The Tropical Serenade at Magic Kingdom. The following year, DOLE Whip made its debut at Magic Kingdom's Aloha Isle, and it's still served there today. DOLE Whip was created in 1983 by food scientist Kathy Westphal at the Dole Technical Center in San Jose, California. The goal was for a dairy-free dry mix version of soft-serve ice cream that could withstand the heat of Florida. The first flavors were pineapple, orange, and strawberry. Pineapple DOLE Whip started being sold at Disneyland in 1986.

In the decades since, DOLE Whip has continued to be a favorite treat. During the pandemic, Disney Parks shared a copycat recipe for people to make at home. In 2023, a frozen version of DOLE Whip started being sold in stores. DOLE Whip also got its own holiday in 2021, National DOLE Whip Day, celebrated today!
