National Margarita Weekend takes place on the third weekend of February and offers a chance to enjoy the margarita, a cocktail commonly made with tequila, triple sec or another orange liqueur, and lime juice. It may be served on the rocks, blended with ice, or finished with a salted rim. Fruit, spicy, and other creative variations have also become popular.
The margarita’s history is disputed. Several accounts place its development in Mexico or along the Mexico–United States border during the 1930s or 1940s, while others connect it to the older Daisy family of cocktails. One frequently repeated story credits Carlos “Danny” Herrera with creating a tequila cocktail for Marjorie King at his restaurant near Tijuana in 1938. Another credits socialite Margarita Sames, who reportedly served a similar drink to guests at her Acapulco home in 1948. No single origin story has been definitively confirmed.
A margarita recipe appeared in Esquire magazine in 1953, and frozen margaritas gained a major boost in 1971 when Dallas restaurateur Mariano Martinez adapted a soft-serve ice cream machine for the drink. Some sources credit Todd McCalla with founding National Margarita Day in 2008, but that account concerns the separate February 22 observance rather than National Margarita Weekend.
How to Observe National Margarita Weekend
Celebrate by making or ordering a margarita in your preferred style: classic, frozen, fruity, or spicy. Try it with tacos, nachos, ceviche, or guacamole, or host a small tasting to compare different flavors and serving styles. Use fresh lime juice if you are preparing drinks at home, and enjoy alcoholic beverages responsibly.
