National French Fried Shrimp Day

Celebrated at least since 2000, French Fried Shrimp Day is an occasion to enjoy french fried shrimp. French fried shrimp is another name for battered or breaded shrimp that is deep-fried or pan-fried. It is called french fried shrimp because it is fried in oil similar to how french fries are often fried. French fried shrimp can be coated in cornmeal, seasoned flour, tempura, panko, and more. Popcorn shrimp and coconut shrimp are two variations of french fried shrimp.

French fried shrimp gained popularity in the United States following World War II. To make it, first the head and most of the tail are removed from peeled shrimp. The sand vein is removed, then the shrimp is washed, and it is given its coating before being dipped into hot oil, which makes it cook quickly. While shrimp are low in calories, french fried shrimp are not. But it's okay to indulge today, because it's a holiday: National French Fried Shrimp Day.

Enjoy french fried shrimp! Make some homemade french fried shrimp or pick some up from a store. If you don't feel like cooking, have french fried shrimp at a restaurant. Have some at a local restaurant or at a national chain like Red Lobster, Bonefish Grill, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, or Cracker Barrel.
