Better Breakfast Month

Better Breakfast Month takes place throughout September and encourages people to make time for a more nutritious morning meal. A balanced breakfast can include several food groups, such as whole grains, low-fat protein, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture notes that eating a balanced breakfast can help people stay sharp, focused, and energized, while the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension highlights breakfast options including oatmeal, whole-grain cereals and breads, peanut butter, yogurt, and fresh or frozen produce.

According to one account of the holiday’s history, the Cereal Institute introduced Better Breakfast Month in September 1951. The campaign promoted healthy breakfast choices while also helping cereal manufacturers increase sales. September was selected in part because it coincided with children returning to school and the return of more structured routines after summer. A related Checkiday account says the month was promoted in local newspapers in 1957 and 1958 and that Better Breakfast Day later became associated with September 26.

How to Observe Better Breakfast Month

Celebrate by preparing a breakfast that includes at least three food groups. Try whole-grain toast or oatmeal with fruit and yogurt, or make an egg-and-vegetable breakfast. Plan or prepare ingredients the night before for an easier morning, and share breakfast with family or friends when possible. You can also use September to try new breakfast ideas, such as the University of Arkansas’s black bean burrito recipe.
