National Moscow Mule Day

National Moscow Mule Day celebrates the Moscow Mule, a vodka cocktail made with ginger beer and lime. It takes place annually on March 3, beginning in 2017.

According to a 2016 announcement from SMIRNOFF, SMIRNOFF vodka and Foodimentary declared the date to commemorate the cocktail’s significance in cocktail history. The announcement described the original Moscow Mule as a combination of SMIRNOFF No. 21 vodka, premium ginger beer, and lime, served in a copper mug.

The same account places the cocktail’s creation in 1941 and credits John G. Martin, Jack Morgan, and Ozeline Schmidt with bringing together vodka, ginger beer, and copper mugs. The date’s “3-3” theme reflects the three ingredients and three people identified in that account. The holiday’s announcement encouraged adults of legal drinking age to enjoy the drink responsibly and plan a safe way home.
