World Digestive Health Day

World Digestive Health Day, observed annually on May 29, raises awareness of digestive diseases and disorders and promotes education about their prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment. The campaign highlights the digestive system’s role in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients, while encouraging people to make informed choices about their health.

The day was initiated by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) in 2004 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the organisation’s creation on May 29, 1958. It was first observed on May 29, 2005. According to the WGO’s account of WDHD, the organisation’s foundation was announced during the First World Congress of Gastroenterology in Washington. Each year, the WGO’s campaign focuses on a particular digestive disease or health topic; recent themes have included gut microbiota, colorectal cancer prevention, and nourishment.

How to Observe World Digestive Health Day

Celebrate by learning about digestive health and sharing evidence-based information with friends or family. Follow the WGO’s current campaign to explore its annual topic, or attend an educational seminar, webinar, or other event connected with the observance.

Support your digestive health with balanced eating, adequate hydration, regular physical activity, and sufficient rest. If you have persistent digestive symptoms, arrange a conversation with a healthcare professional rather than ignoring them.
