World Tapas Day

World Tapas Day celebrates tapas, Spain’s small and varied dishes, and the social experience of sharing them. Observed on the third Thursday in June, the day highlights tapas as a symbol of Spanish gastronomy, culinary creativity, and convivial dining. Tapas may be simple or elaborate, hot or cold, and can include ingredients such as olives, cheese, seafood, meat, vegetables, and bread.

The observance was established in 2016 through the collaboration of Spain’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism and Tasting Spain. Their agreement with Turespaña provided for World Tapas Day to take place on the third Thursday of June each year, with the goal of presenting Spanish cuisine to an international audience and promoting Spain as a gastronomic destination. The initiative’s original announcement described tapas as small, varied portions commonly enjoyed in groups.

The history of tapas themselves is less certain. The Spanish word tapa means “cover,” and one longstanding explanation says that bread, cheese, or cured meat was placed over a drink to keep out dust or insects. Other stories credit Spanish monarchs with encouraging food to be served alongside wine. These accounts remain legends rather than a confirmed single origin, but the tradition has developed into a distinctive way of eating that emphasizes variety, conversation, and sharing.

How to Observe World Tapas Day

Celebrate by visiting a Spanish restaurant or preparing a selection of small plates at home. Include a variety of flavors and textures—such as olives, cheese, vegetables, seafood, or cured meats—and share them with friends or family. You can also learn about regional tapas traditions and explore how different ingredients and cooking styles shape Spain’s many interpretations of this cuisine.
