A chocolate parfait, celebrated today with National Chocolate Parfait Day, is a layered dessert consisting of ice cream, chocolate syrup, and whipped cream. It may also be made with custard, pudding, heavy cream, yogurt, or mousse, and it often has a crumbly, cake-like base. Fruit, liqueurs, nuts, and granola have also been used in recipes. Chocolate parfait is usually topped with whipped cream, nuts, and fruits such as maraschino cherries, strawberries, or raspberries. It is served in a tall, narrow, and footed glass called a parfait glass, and is eaten with a long spoon. Its name comes from the French parfait, a frozen custard dessert, and parfait means "perfect" in French. National Chocolate Parfait Day has been observed at least since 1985, a year the holiday appeared in Sandra Boynton's Calendar of Self-Indulgence.
